Scotland by road: three journeys

Three routes we know well, each a starting point rather than a fixed plan, with maps and day-by-day notes. We adjust the pace, the stops and the places to stay to suit you, and can arrange a private driver for any day or the whole journey.

The three routes

3 nights: Central Scotland

Castles, lochs and Highland Perthshire. A short loop from Edinburgh through Stirling, the Trossachs, Loch Lomond and Highland Perthshire. About 300 miles.

5 nights: The Highlands

Speyside, Wester Ross and Glencoe. Whisky country, the mountains of the far north-west and the glens of Lochaber. From Edinburgh, about 620 miles.

7 nights: The Islands

Mull, Skye and the Outer Hebrides. A west-coast journey by road and sea, with Iona, Ardnamurchan, Skye and the white beaches of Harris. From Glasgow, about 600 miles by road.

Inside the guide

Eleven illustrated pages.

  • A map of each route
  • Day-by-day notes with driving times and distances
  • Where to stop and what to see along the way
  • A suggested area to stay each night
  • Ferry crossings on the island route
  • Driving in Scotland: single-track roads and passing places
  • Whisky days, and why we arrange a driver

Times in the guide are driving only, at an easy pace, without stops. Distances are approximate.

A private driver, any day

Scotland’s drink-driving limit is very low: in practice, a single drink can put you over. On distillery days we arrange a driver, so that everyone can taste.
